I am honoured to have been elected as the new leader of the Labour group on the Borough Council. I want to thank Lizzie Shenton for the kindness, dignity and commitment that she brought to the role of leader of the group and the council.

Now we have a Tory council in Newcastle, and an unbroken line of Tories, from Government, to County Council, passing down the austerity and cuts straight to the most vulnerable in our community.

The Birth of Period Power
Linda Allbutt, Activist and Founder of Period Power

Some time ago I was tagged into a Facebook post by my friend Councillor Ruth Rosenau, asking for donations of sanitary products. I was ashamed that I had never even considered that this was a problem for so many women. It was then that I decided to do what little I could. So I began asking for help and donations from local Unions.

It’s Brexit again, I’m afraid. I know lots by now will be totally ‘Brexited- out’. I certainly am, and we’ve yet to

start the hard bit – about future relations. But with the Tories in civil war again, I thought a few words about the lie of the land might be useful, not least because another election could be round the corner.

The EU Withdrawal Bill is now off in the House of Lords, where it will be dissected until well after Easter. What this bit of law does is repeal the 1972 European Communities Act, taking us out on ‘exit day’, now enshrined as 29th March, 2019

We are entering an intense electioneering campaign to win back control of the council and there will be huge calls on all our members for help with leafleting, canvassing, door knocking and phone banking.

Polling day is the 3rd May so please keep free the weekend before polling day, if you can, to help us get out the vote. As you can tell from our visits by Rebecca Long Bailey, Margaret Greenwood, we are being supported by the Labour Party as a target area. That does show the importance of winning local elections and ensuring we send a strong message out to the country that the Conservatives damaging policies are not working with or for the people.

Sylvia Butler, one of our long-serving members recalls fun of being a member down the years…

In the early 1990s, I became a social organiser and fundraising officer for Newcastle CLP. During that time we have had many, many fundraising and social events.

We were delighted to have Margaret Greenwood visit us for our February National Campaign Day. We were focussing on the impact of cuts to our police force with 21 000 police officers no cut, 566 of those in Staffordshire. Further cuts and re-organisation will see our police officers located in Hanley rather than in Newcastle, casting severe concerns on the ability to respond quickly to reports.

It is with great sadness that we report the death on 15th February of our oldest member of the party, John Hood aged 103.  John or “Jack” as he was known, was a lifelong socialist and anti- fascist.  Born on 15th January, 1915 Jack had a great interest in politics at all levels but he was especially fascinated by international events.
