Newcastle Labour trips, fish n chips & fundraising

Sylvia Butler, one of our long-serving members recalls fun of being a member down the years…

In the early 1990s, I became a social organiser and fundraising officer for Newcastle CLP. During that time we have had many, many fundraising and social events.

The highlights of each year were the daytrips to LLandudno, Blackpool, the Yorkshire Dales, the Black Country Museum, Ironbridge, the Lakes, The Peak District, the Cotswolds and longer weekend breaks in Dublin, Bruges, Ghent and Paris. This is not an exhaustive list – I can’t remember everywhere we went but I do remember what a brilliant time we all had. Every trip has special memories! Sadly, many of the old friends who were regulars on our trips are no longer with us. We always had a raffle on the way home and money raised went in the coffers.

As well as trips we had socials, coffee mornings, BBQs, garden parties, jumble sales, bring and buys, quiz nights and an annual dinner. All were fun-filled and highly enjoyable occasions which brought members together and raised valuable money for CLP funds and campaigns.

I’ve managed to dig some photos of these trips and events. For some they’ll provide great memories. For others it’s a chance to see how well we have all aged.

Last but not least, I’d like to promote the 100 Club – the first draw was 19/9/97 and John Golding was the first winner.

Over the years we have raised on average over £750 a year. One day, when I have chance to go through my big book, I’ll be able to work it all out.

This regular income has been vital to our fundraising in the CLP and if you have not already done so, please consider taking out a number. After all, you’ve got better chances of winning than in the National Lottery and the money will go towards doing good work in the CLP.

For £1 per number, per month, you could win the first prize of

£40 or second prize of £10. You can do this by paying monthly, quarterly, annually, by direct debit, by cash or by cheque.

Thank you to all members you have supported us in the past and continue to do so now!
