Message to members re. General Election 2017 announcement

Dear Members,

With a General Election now called for June 8th I am writing to you all to ask that we rally together as a Labour family to fight this election with all our hearts and souls.

I am very proud of our 2015 General Election campaign, in which we were heavily targeted by the Conservatives, and of course completely outspent. However, we fought a positive campaign and were the only Labour Borough Seat in the West Midlands that held its seat, so we know we can keep Newcastle Labour in tough elections! We did it then – we will do it again!

In recent weeks we have seen Labour put forward a raft of positive policies that are practical and meaningful to the ordinary voter. We have ten pledges which outline the key policy areas, each with additional details, which I encourage all to read. As the Party organises its manifesto I will be sending one sided information sheets so that we all know and understand Labour policies, a feature that was asked for by members in the last election.

As Brexit is obviously the key issue I have included here a reminder of Labour’s six tests for Brexit:

1. Does it ensure a strong and collaborative future relationship with the EU?
2. Does it deliver the “exact same benefits” as we currently have as members of the Single Market and Customs Union?
3. Does it ensure the fair management of migration in the interests of the economy and communities?
4. Does it defend rights and protections and prevent a race to the bottom?
5. Does it protect national security and our capacity to tackle cross-border crime?
6. Does it deliver for all regions and nations of the UK?

Keir Starmer is quoted as saying: “Labour will not support a deal that fails to reflect core British values and the six tests I have set out”. As we know, the Labour Party policy was to acknowledge the referendum result but that we will not support a Brexit that will leave the people of Newcastle poorer and less secure. So we can campaign confidently as a pro-Britain and pro-Europe party and one that cares for all the voters in Newcastle.

In the next week we will be meeting to plan the Newcastle campaign and will keep members informed. Please keep an eye on our website and Facebook page plus your email. Key emails to ensure are not sent into your junk file are CLP@newcastlelabour.com and my email allisongardner@gmail.com (note the two Ls in Allison).

We will unite as a Party, we will keep Newcastle Labour and we will campaign for a Labour Government.

The fight starts now!

In solidarity,

Allison Gardner
Chair of Newcastle under Lyme Constituency Labour Party
