Council Update Spring 2018

I am honoured to have been elected as the new leader of the Labour group on the Borough Council. I want to thank Lizzie Shenton for the kindness, dignity and commitment that she brought to the role of leader of the group and the council.

Now we have a Tory council in Newcastle, and an unbroken line of Tories, from Government, to County Council, passing down the austerity and cuts straight to the most vulnerable in our community.

Let’s change that. On May 3rd we have the chance to put a Labour council back in Newcastle, not to oversee the decline of Newcastle, or put a human face on Tory cuts, but to make a REAL difference. Let’s claw back some of the

£280,000,000 income tax our residents pay to the Tory Government every year, and bring back the £41,000,000 council tax that we pay to the Tory County.

Let’s fight to make Newcastle a Unitary authority with its destiny in its own hands. Let’s build the first council houses for a generation. Let’s take our public services and social care away from the corporations that overcharge and under deliver. Let’s start awarding contracts to local co- operatives and give our residents a real stake in our community. Let’s make Newcastle a beacon of hope. We can all play a part, whether it’s folding leaflets and stuffing envelopes, spreading our campaign on social media, talking to your neighbours and friends, leafleting door knocking or phone canvassing.

Let’s do it!

Tony Kearon

Newcastle-under-Lyme Labour Group Leader
